Paris 2024 Olympic Games – Team Ireland Medal Alert

**Tuesday, August 6, 2024**

Team Ireland’s boxing superstar, Kellie Harrington, clinched Olympic GOLD in the 60kg Lightweight category, defeating China’s Wenlu Yang 4-1 in Paris. This victory allows Harrington to retain the Olympic title she first won in Tokyo.

Kellie Harrington, the first boxing champion crowned at Paris 2024, triumphed in the purpose-built ring at the iconic Roland Garros stadium, cheered on by an audience of 15,000.

Harrington made history last Wednesday by becoming the first Irish woman to win medals at two Olympic Games. Tonight, the 34-year-old from Portland Row, Dublin, becomes the first Irish woman to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals.

As the first Irish boxer to contest and win consecutive Olympic finals, Harrington, representing St. Mary’s BC in Tallaght, is now the most successful Irish boxer in the 100-year history of the Olympic Games. Her Paris 2024 GOLD marks the 19th Irish Olympic medal in boxing.

An overjoyed Harrington reflected on her achievement: “It just gives hope. All these young kids, all these teenagers, it gives hope to them, it gives hope to the people of Ireland. This one was for me.”

Discussing her strategy, Harrington said: “Just be happy – happy, smile, and enjoy it. It’s the last hurrah – I’m done. I’ve always said that I want to retire a champion – that’s it!”

Harrington displayed mastery in the first round, constantly switching her stance and deflecting all attacks, winning 4-1. Despite a slip in the second round, she still secured a 4-1 victory. Dominating the final round with another 4-1 score, Harrington celebrated her historic win with a special ring dance, joined by long-time head coach Zuari Anita.

Only three other Irish athletes have won back-to-back Olympic gold medals: Hammer thrower Dr. Pat O’Callaghan in 1928 and 1932, and rowers Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan in 2020 and Paris 2024. Kellie Harrington now joins this exclusive club.

Team Ireland has won seven medals at Paris 2024: four golds across four different sports and three bronze.

Anthony Joshua v Francis Ngannou Fight Preview and Predictions

The heavyweight showdown between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou promises to be a clash of titans, captivating fans worldwide. As both fighters step into the ring at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, March 8, anticipation reaches a fever pitch. Joshua, the seasoned boxing champion, brings a wealth of experience and technical prowess, while Ngannou, the MMA powerhouse, boasts raw, unbridled power that has mesmerized audiences in the octagon.

Marketed as ‘Knockout Chaos,’ this bout embodies the explosive potential inherent in heavyweight boxing. Joshua’s trajectory in the betting odds, drifting slightly in the lead-up to the fight, suggests a shifting landscape, perhaps influenced by the fervent support from Ngannou’s legion of MMA followers. Despite the odds, Joshua remains the favorite, with his commanding presence and proven track record in the ring.

Ngannou’s transition from MMA to boxing has been met with both excitement and skepticism. His ability to generate bone-crushing knockouts in the octagon is undeniable, as evidenced by his electrifying victory over Tyson Fury. However, the transition to the squared circle presents a new set of challenges, requiring nuanced footwork and defensive skills that may not be his forte. Yet, Ngannou’s raw athleticism and sheer punching power cannot be underestimated, making him a formidable opponent for any heavyweight.

As the two giants square off, the dynamics of the fight come into sharp focus. Joshua’s technical proficiency and disciplined approach contrast with Ngannou’s aggressive style and devastating knockout potential. The Cameroonian’s forward pressure and wide-guard stance aim to close the distance and unleash his formidable power, while Joshua seeks to maintain range and exploit openings with his precision punching.

The total rounds line set at 7.5 indicates expectations of a swift, high-impact encounter. With both fighters possessing the ability to end the fight with a single blow, the outcome hangs in the balance, teetering on the edge of chaos. The scorching temperatures of Riyadh further add to the intensity, as fatigue becomes a factor in the later rounds.

In the end, the clash between Joshua and Ngannou transcends mere sport, embodying the primal essence of combat. It’s a battle for supremacy, a test of wills, and a spectacle that captures the imagination of fight fans worldwide. As the clock ticks down to the opening bell, anticipation mounts, and the world holds its breath, awaiting the eruption of ‘Knockout Chaos’ in the heart of the desert.

In the world of combat sports, clashes between champions from different disciplines have always piqued the interest of fans.

The showdown between Tyson Fury, the WBC heavyweight boxing champion, and Francis Ngannou, the UFC’s devastating heavyweight knockout artist, was one of the most captivating events in recent memory. This comprehensive overview will delve into the key details surrounding the October 28 showdown between Fury and Ngannou, examining the significance of this encounter for both combat sports and the athletes themselves.

About Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury, the “Gypsy King,” is one of the most charismatic and accomplished heavyweight boxers of his generation. Standing at 6’9″ with a reach that seems to stretch into eternity, Fury is known for his unorthodox boxing style, remarkable agility for a man of his size, and ability to adapt in the ring. With an impressive record of 34 wins, one draw, and 0 losses, he is the current WBC heavyweight champion and has conquered some of the biggest names in the division.

The 35-year-old boxing IQ, ring generalship, and outstanding defensive skills make him a formidable opponent for anyone. His victory over long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 marked a turning point in the heavyweight division, and he has since remained a dominant force. His foray into the world of MMA and a win over Ngannou have generated immense intrigue for Bitcoin bettors, which is a good testimony for those who ask the question of why choose crypto betting sites.

About Francis Ngannou

Francis “The Predator” Ngannou, on the other hand, has become a household name in the MMA world. With a background in boxing, Ngannou is known for his jaw-dropping knockout power. Standing 6’4″ and weighing around 260 pounds, Ngannou boasts a reach that rivals many of his heavyweight boxing counterparts. His MMA record stands at 17 wins and three losses, with his most recent victories highlighting his brutal striking abilities.

Ngannou’s journey to the top of the UFC’s heavyweight division has been remarkable. His thunderous punches have seen him finish opponents in seconds, leading to his 2021 knockout of Stipe Miocic to become the UFC heavyweight champion. His evolution as a well-rounded fighter, coupled with his raw power, has made him a formidable opponent for Fury.

Review of the game

Fury vs. Ngannou represents a unique opportunity for combat sports to transcend their boundaries. It’s a bridge between boxing and MMA, two disciplines that have historically remained separated. This crossover battle is a bold experiment that opens the door to further interactions between fighters from different backgrounds.

While Fury and Ngannou come from different weight classes, a catchweight limit was established to ensure fairness and safety for both fighters. Both fighters were subjected to rigorous drug testing to ensure a level playing field. Before the Deontay Wilder fight in February, Fury had lost about 140 pounds, which puts him at about the same weight as Francis.

The big fight attracted fans from both sports, sparking a new era of cross-discipline fights. The Fury vs. Ngannou fight follows specific rules and formats to ensure a fair and entertaining contest. The bout took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with strict safety standards and regulations, which may include a regulation boxing ring or a specially designed arena.

The fight consists of many rounds, typically following the standard rules of professional boxing. Moreover, it was scored by a panel of judges, following the 10-point must system, a standard scoring system in professional boxing. The three rounds usually last three minutes with one-minute breaks in between.

Many crypto punters expected Fury to control and outclass Francis since the event was based on Boxing rules and style. Conversely, that was not the case, as Ngannou almost pulled one of the biggest surprises in the history of boxing. Unfortunately, Fury won the MMA Star in the third round on a split decision, but the call was a close one, making many fans and Bitcoin bettors call out for a rematch.

Significance of Fury vs. Ngannou Fight

The event was a monumental event that transcended the boundaries of combat sports, bringing together two of the most prominent and intriguing figures in their respective disciplines. This unique crossover fight generated excitement and curiosity worldwide, and it carries significant implications for both boxing and MMA. It is a testament to the evolution of sports, the adaptability of athletes, and the ever-expanding horizons of sporting entertainment.

The clash between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou is a statement of the global appeal of combat sports and the ability of exceptional athletes to break down barriers. This event reminds us of the unifying power of athletic competition and the enduring appeal of a good old-fashioned showdown between titans. Nevertheless, the fight between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou holds immense significance on several levels, as we will discuss below:

A Test of Adaptability

For both Fury and Ngannou, this event was a test of adaptability. Tyson Fury, known for his boxing prowess, enters the MMA cage, where grappling and ground fighting are essential components of the game. On the other hand, Ngannou, primarily a mixed martial artist, competes under boxing rules, limiting his use of kicks, takedowns, and submissions. This transition highlights the versatility of these athletes and their ability to adapt to new challenges.

A Challenge for Boxing and MMA

The outcome of Fury vs. Ngannou reverberates through both boxing and MMA communities. A victory for Fury underscores the dominance of boxing over MMA in the realm of striking sports. At the same time, a win for Ngannou would have solidified that MMA fighters possess the raw power and adaptability to compete successfully in boxing.

The Financial Implications

The bout carries significant financial implications. The fight between these charismatic and globally recognized athletes generated substantial revenue through pay-per-view sales, ticket sales, crypto betting, sponsorships, and merchandise. This financial windfall will set new benchmarks for the earnings of combat sports athletes and the potential for cross-discipline bouts.

A Testament to Sporting Evolution

The clash between Fury and Ngannou is a testament to the evolution of sports and the ever-growing audience demand for unique and entertaining contests. The willingness of athletes from diverse backgrounds to face each other in competition reflects their dedication to the art of combat and their desire to provide fans with extraordinary events.

The American boxer will have the home advantage when he takes on the Irishman at SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Quigley earned the title shot after racking up a three-fight win streak following his sole professional loss to Tureano Johnson two years ago.

Conlan Boxing Vows to Bring Big Boxing Back To Belfast

WBA Interim Featherweight World Champion and two-time Olympian, Michael Conlan and his brother, manager and ex-professional boxer, Jamie, have announced plans to bring big boxing bouts back to Belfast with the official launch of Conlan Boxing.

Independently owned by the two Belfast brothers, the management and promotional company plans to bring several fight nights to the city every year and sign and showcase the best local talent from all backgrounds and communities.

Speaking ahead of this Friday’s Conlan Boxing event in the Ulster Hall, Jamie Conlan, Director said:

“Belfast is an amazing Boxing city with a rich history, tremendous home-grown talent and an unbeatable atmosphere at fights. However, the one thing that has been lacking over the years is consistency and we aim to change this with Conlan Boxing. We are going to put on several fight nights every year and give up and coming boxers from across Northern Ireland the opportunity to go up against the big names.

Michael is at the top of his game and having retired from professional boxing in 2017, I’ve spent the last four years managing and developing some of the world’s best boxing talent so we know the sport inside out, what it takes for boxers to succeed and how to put on a good show. We’re excited to be able to come together and launch our own independent management and promotional company and give something back to the local fans who have supported us all these years.”

Michael Conlan, Director of Conlan Boxing added:

“In the months and years ahead, Jamie and I are looking forward to finding and developing the best local talent from all backgrounds and communities across Northern Ireland. As well as fighting on home turf, there will be opportunities to travel the world to challenge for titles and we’re looking forward to announcing our first signing in the next couple of weeks.

We’re also going to have Conlan Boxing Workshops throughout the year to encourage children to get involved in the sport from a young age, teach them some of the skills and inspire the next generation of local boxing talent!”

A limited number of tickets are still available for Friday’s Conlan Boxing event in the Ulster Hall. To purchase, go to www.ulsterhall.co.uk

Michael Conlan is set to fight Leigh Wood for the WBA World Featherweight title after promotion Matchroom Boxing won the purse bid.

Conlan is Wood’s mandatory challenger after his interim title win over TJ Doheny at Falls Park in Belfast last year.

His most recent victory saw him move to 16-0 in his professional career after his controversial exit at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

The WBA had opened up purse bids for the fight on Monday morning with Matchroom and Top Rank seen as the favourites to land it.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn announced their bidding victory on Twitter that evening: “Delighted to win the purse bid for our Champ @itsLeighWood to defend his WBA World title against @mickconlan11 – official announcement coming soon.”

Leigh Wood, who is represented by Matchroom, won the WBA belt in July when he knocked Chinese boxer Can Xu down in the 12th round of their fight at Matchroom HG Garden.

The fight is set to be broadcast on DAZN due to their partnership with Matchroom Boxing and is expected to take place in 2022, possibly on St Patrick’s Day – Wood is currently recovering from an injury.

This bout will be the first World title bout that Conlan has fought at professional level – he has previously fought for and won the WBO inter-continetal featherweight and bantamweight belts as well as the featherweight division’s WBA interim belt, as previously mentioned.

What’s Next For Tyson Fury?

After his second knock-out victory over former WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder at The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas nine days. Tyson Fury has now cemented himself as the greatest heavyweight of his era for the time being.

After retaining his WBC Heavyweight title in what was the first official title defence of his astonishing career against long-time rival Deontay Wilder.

Winning the Wilder trilogy in emphatic fashion, the list of opponents the Gypsy King could face next is a mouthwatering one. You can get betting on the fight on one of most popular betting apps on your phone. With a possible undisputed title fight on the horizon with either champion Oleksandr Usyk or Anthony Joshua, that being said anything can happen until then.

Joshua’s loss to Usyk has shaken up the already interesting Heavyweight picture. With Tyson Fury now top dog after defeating Wilder in their trilogy bout, potential fights will be made in the upcoming months.

For Fury, the question remains on where does he go from here and who can take his undefeated record away from him.

Let’s find out.

Dillian Whyte

After Fury ultimately dismantled Wilder in October, calls for an undisputed bout between the winner of the Usyk and Joshua rematch have been overturned after it was confirmed by the WBC sanctioning bodies that Fury must defend his title against interim WBC challenger Dillian Whyte next, if he gets past Otto Wallin later this month that is.

Whyte has been long touted as the main challenger for the WBC belt after waiting over 600 days for a title shot. His wait escalated even further after he got stunningly knocked out by Russian Alexander Povetkin before winning the rematch in deserving fashion.

The pair have got back and forth in recent years, with both fighters admitting they got the best out of each other in sparring sessions from years gone by.

If Whyte can overcome Wallin, he should get his title shot.

Oleksandr Usyk

The newly crowned Heavyweight champion shocked many with his clinical performance against Anthony Joshua to claim all four of the Brit’s belts in September. Since then many pundits and promoters have called for an undisputed bout and for Joshua to step aside.

With Joshua triggering his rematch clause for Spring 2022 in order to try and reclaim his belts, the likelihood of Fury and Usyk squaring off, for the time being, is off the cards.

If Usyk can get past Joshua again, and Fury with Whyte, all roads will lead to the undisputed bout between the pair.

Anthony Joshua

The fight that everyone wanted was so close only a few months ago, but agenda’s and boxing politics cancelled the biggest fight in boxing and a fight the sport badly needed.

Now, Joshua is in danger of potentially being shunned out of the title picture for the foreseeable future after his loss to Usyk in September. However, AJ has recently triggered his rematch clause and will be scheduled to get back in there with Usyk sometime in Spring 2022.

If Joshua can get past Usyk, the fantasy match-up between him and Fury will be back o track, given that there is no mandatory’s, no injuries and no politics.

A fight between Joshua and Fury heavily favours Fury but given that it is Heavyweight boxing and anything can happen on any given night, the fight needs to happen, for boxing’s sake.

Likelihood of Victory: 9/10

What’s Next for Anthony Joshua?

After his second career loss to the new Ukrainian Heavyweight champion and former Cruiserweight great Oleksandr Usyk at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September, Anthony Joshua is in a precarious position in his career.

After retaining his WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF Heavyweight titles against foe Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019, he has since gone on to knock out Kubrat Pulev before a would-be fantasy match-up with British rival Tyson Fury was cancelled.

Joshua’s loss to Usyk has shaken up the already interesting Heavyweight picture. With Tyson Fury top dog after defeating Deontay Wilder in their trilogy bout, potential fights will be made in the upcoming months.

For AJ, the question remains on where does he go from here now that he has lost his belts for a second time.

Let’s find out.

Oleksandr Usyk

Somewhat of a shock loss to the Ukrainian, Usyk proved to be too skilled, too good and too much for AJ in their first fight. From the very first round, Joshua seemed confused at how to approach the fight with Usyk cutting angles and catching the Brit numerous times with his looping left.

Being a southpaw and a great one at that was always going to be a difficult challenge for AJ to overcome, but for many, and me included. I predicted Joshua would be too big, too strong and being a natural Heavyweight would get him over the line here.

In the end, Usyk proved everyone wrong, dominating AJ throughout, outboxing him and almost stopping him in the 12th Round.

If Joshua is to retain his titles in their eventual rematch, a new gameplan will need to be thought off, trying to box a boxer was a terrible decision and it cost him greatly.

Likelihood of Victory: 6/10

Tyson Fury

The biggest fight in British boxing history and what was seen as the biggest fight to make not long ago, the fight between AJ and Fury was so close to being made, but because of the pandemic and Deontay Wilder, the plug was pulled.

Since then, both fighters have had their contractual fights, with Joshua losing and Fury overcoming Wilder’s power to retain his WBC title.

Fans will still want this fight to happen, but the magic has been lost with Joshua taking another loss, further delaying the match-up.

With Joshua’s underwhelming performance against Usyk and Fury managing to knock-out Wilder for a second time, Fury would be a clear favourite if they ever were to box one another. But, if AJ can overcome his demons and Fury defeats his mandatory title defence, all signs will lead to the fight everyone wants.

Excitement: 10/10

Likelihood of Victory: 5/10

Potential to happen Next: 7/10

Deontay Wilder

The modern-day Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe, Joshua and Wilder missed the boat in terms of pulling off the first undisputed champion since 2002. With disagreements over purses, contracts and small details, the fight that boxing needed was dead in the water, personified by Joshua shockingly losing to Ruiz Jr in New York in 2019.

With Wilder now 36 and coming to the twilight end of his career, the fight has to be made within the next 2-3 years to give boxing fans a definitive answer on who is the better man between the pair.

Win or lose in his rematch with Usyk, Joshua may well finally get in the ring with Wilder. With the Bronze Bomber seemingly out of the WBC title picture with his second loss to Fury, the road may be clear for a showdown with his British rival in a fight that should have happened 3 years ago.

Excitement: 8/10

Likelihood of Victory: 7/10

Potential to happen Next: 8/10

Dillian Whyte

Joshua’s long time British rival Dillian Whyte has a score to settle with the man who handed him his first professional defeat back in 2015 with a devasting KO. This was after a heated build-up, with jibes thrown back and forth after Whyte defeated Joshua in the amateurs years prior.

Now, Whyte is scheduled to fight Tyson Fury for the WBC title if he defeats challenger Otto Wallin in October. If Joshua wins back his belts and his Whyte manages to defeat Wallin and then pull off an upset against Fury, the rematch between the pair could be on the cards.

Excitement: 6/10

Likelihood of Victory: 8/10
