Leading Jockey Statistics for The Cheltenham Festival – Ruby Walsh has dominated the Boodles Leading Jockey Award at The Festival, taking the title nine times in the last 12 years.
The only three occasions the rider has not topped the table during that time came in 2012 (Barry Geraghty), 2007 (Robert Thornton) and 2005 (Graham Lee) and this year he is hot favourite to succeed again.
The 36-year-old, as stable jockey to Ireland’s champion Jump trainer Willie Mullins, is in a tremendous position ahead of the four days of unrivalled racing at Cheltenham,Tuesday, March 15 to Friday, March 18.
Last year, an opening day three-timer – which would have been stretched to four successes if Annie Power had not fallen at the last with the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle at her mercy – got him off to a good start. He took the Grade One Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle on Douvan, the Grade One Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase on Un De Sceaux and the Grade One Stan James Champion Hurdle on Faugheen on Champion Day and completed his four-strong tally in the Grade One JLT Novices’ Chase on Vautour on St Patrick’s Thursday.
Walsh’s best total at The Festival came in 2009 when he enjoyed a record seven successes. He is the top jockey of all time at The Festival with 45 wins.
